Alnwick Gardens Photoshoot

Yesterday myself, photographer Paul and new model Jamie set off to Northumberland tourist hot spot Alnwick Gardens for a 'Northumberland' themed photo shoot, as part of Frock N Roll's involvement in Miss Northumberland 2012. The weather was touch and go, and there was some moments where we thought 'shall we call it a day', but we persevered and ended up working around the weather, choosing enclosed and under-cover areas, and the fabulous tree house to get our shots, and finally wrapped just as the showers came. I havent seen the pictures yet as they are still being edited by Paul, but I can't wait to see them. It will be exciting to see the combination of fashion and scenery together. Alnwick Gardens is a popular place for photo shoots...and I can see why!

(the grand cascade, picture taken from Alnwick Garden website)

Alnwick Gardens is an amazing place, with landscapes and gardens, water features, architecture and unique features such as the Tree house, the poison garden, and rose garden, as well as plenty for the kids to do. My daughter was quite happy playing on the green and in the water fountains.
We got some great shots around the Grande Cascade, the Tree house, the walled garden and few other spots. It wasn't hard to find great photo opportunities though, and we probably could have spent a full day there with many outfit changes, as there was always a new scenic shot at every turn.

The staff at Alnwick Gardens are amazing...with special thanks to Daniel Gurney, who made us very welcome and was really enthusiastic about the shoot. Although he was shocked to hear I had never visited the Gardens before, despite living a mere 20 minutes drive away, he was keen to show me the photographic spots around the garden. He responded to emails straight away and provided me with all the information I needed, and was prompt to meet me at the entrance. He kept his phone with him so that he was on hand if I needed anything - excellent customer service with the personal touch, the way it should be!

"The Alnwick Garden is more than a garden, it is a registered charity that places people at its heart, whether they be individuals or part of a community. As well as standing for contemporary gardening excellence, The Garden stimulates change through play, learning, the arts, healthy activity, addressing disability and the economic renaissance of a rural community." - Alnwick Garden website

For more information about Alnwick gardens, including opening times and entry prices, visit the website at www.alnwickgarden.com.
We had a great time and would definitely visit again, and I'm sure we will do another shoot there soon.

Keep an eye on Facebook and the website for the pictures, and the best few taken will be displayed at the Miss Northumberland 2012 final at Newton Hall on June 29th.

Take care, Amy

Proud sponsors of 'Miss Northumberland 2012'!

Wow, it's all happening here at FNR HQ! We are currently involved in the Miss Northumberland 2012 competition, and we have just completed heat 2 which took place last Tuesday at Blackmores of Alnwick. Six girls entered and three were chosen to go through to the final which takes place at Newton Hall, Newton-by-the-sea. I was lucky enough to be one of the judges, and had to grasp using the microphone whilst introducing myself and asking questions.
Michaela, Tamlyn and overall winner Stephanie Greive stood out from the crowd. All gorgeous girls, but I loved Stephanie. She has long bright blonde hair, pretty face, style and quirkiness. And her love for Vivienne Westwood sealed it for me!
Heat 3 takes place at the Black Swan in Alnwick next wednesday June 6th, and there is still time to enter. Any girls interested should see the Miss Northumberland website for details.

Our 'best dressed' celebs to look out for in 2010

The 15 minutes of fame experienced by some celebs can often be extended if they get to be known as a 'style icon'. Many celebs make a 'brand' of themselves, so it is extremely important for them to look exquisite whenever they are seen in the public eye. Any slip-up can cost them precious 'best dressed' moments and more 'what were they thinking?!' nightmares!......

Read more... Here are our ‘best dressed’ celebs to look out for in 2010!! You may not agree with all of them, but then again style is such a personal thing...surely it is best to be noticed for experimenting and being brave and ballsy enough to pull off a crazy outfit, then to fade out of the spotlight for being a ‘plain Jane’.....!

AUDREY TAUTOU - What can we say about this girl other than gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! Such a cute pretty face and long lean body which a bin bag would probably look good on! Her profile as an actress was raised last year by her appearance as Coco Chanel in the film 'Coco Before Chanel' and the accompanying advertising of course. She was heavily Chanel-clad as you might expect, but she looked fab. Her mix of sophistication and elegance makes her a red carpet favourite, and we predict things will only get better for her from now on.

EMMA WATSON - Once just a child actress in the Harry Potter films, Emma has now scaled the fashion heights of the biggest designer shows, including Christopher Kane, Chanel, and Jason Wu...as well as being crowned the new face of Burberry. Emma has grown up rapidly over the last few years and has developed her own style of vintage and designer mix. She seems to do no wrong in the style stakes at the minute...and we hope she carry’s on being a fashion icon and she is a great role model for teenage girls.

CHERYL COLE - OK, so we might be a little biased where Cheryl is concerned...but she is a local to us so we have to follow her! Her outfits on 2009's 'X-Factor' where much braver and bolder than we have seen in previous times with Cheryl...so we can see her confidence is booming. Cheryl has used new edgy designers in the past year, including Richard Nicoll, David Koma and Marios Schwab (names to look out for in the future). Mostly we were seeing mini dresses, structured dresses, full length gowns, and asymmetric shapes. Lets hope this new Cheryl is here to stay!

LADY GAGA - Say what you will about GaGa, but down at Frock 'n' Roll HQ we LOVE her! She may have been a little hard to take at first, but she never lets us down with a visual display of colourful, futuristic, structured, revealing, and sometimes shocking outfits! She expresses herself through her clothes, once saying that she 'likes to shock' - well she certainly does that. And it doesn't just stop at the clothes - her make-up is like art, her hair is daring, and her routines and performances are never dull. GaGa still manages to use huge named designers, including Chanel, Marc Jacobs and Alexander McQueen, so we are sure she will continue to shock and stun the public throughout 2010.

ANNA FRIEL - Anna has slipped off our radars for a while but she is back and appearing as Holly Golightly in the stage version of 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'. And it seems she has been raiding Topshops rails while she has been away! Seen almost weekly at the end of 2009 in magazine's such as 'Look', 'Heat' and 'More!' wearing a new Topshop lovely. Anna also loves vintage and has the face where she can look gorgeous is anything full length and foisty! Her mix of high street and vintage is also teamed to a bit of Diesel Black Gold and Antonio Berardi for good designer measure.

So sad about Brittany Murphy, a talented actress and so young. This year has seen so many young people dying so suddenly, it really makes you think. I remember Brittany most for her voice of Luanne in 'King of the Hill' - she was brilliant in it!

The Clothes Show Live 2009

Monday, 7th December 2009

The theatre show was especially brilliant this year, and we particularly loved the part where the models were dressed as wind-up children’s toys, and came down the catwalk in a robot style. Their brightly coloured and shaped patterned trapeze dresses, hot pants and military jackets were intense but fab. And of course, every lady in the audience loved the male models, and especially the scene where they came out in glitter hot pants and fairy wings – not leaving much to the imagination then! The dancing saw a mixture of contemporary, 60’s jive and disco dancing, and the costumes were everything from PVC cat suits to Santa suit inspired lingerie.
This year’s catwalk was filled with sequins, tailoring and faux fur, amongst other styles. The sequins were seen on mini-skirts, hot pants, dresses, waistcoats and leggings (even the boys were wearing them!), pretty much what you can pick up in any high street store or in our very own store at the moment. Sequins have been huge over the past few months, and show no sign of sitting in the back of the wardrobe yet. A real stunningly beautiful piece for us was the sequin encrusted cutaway leotard – gorgeous! Faux fur looks set to be huge this winter, and a certain retailer at the clothes show, ‘Furnatic’, seemed to be doing pretty well at the event. In the catwalk show, fur was worn by the males and females in the styles of hats and scarves, jackets (cropped and knee length coats) and gilets, as well as being used as trims on many other items. Faux fur is great, especially in the winter months as it will keep you snugly warm whilst looking fierce at the same time. And it is always a trend that reappears every few seasons, so you know you will get plenty wear out of a high quality piece. Of course, if you are brave you could try wearing the real thing; we hear rabbit fur is very popular at the moment, especially in cropped jackets. The tailoring (again, another trend which keeps reappearing) was seen in work-wear e.g. shirts, blouses, waistcoats and pencil skirts, shorts (mini and thigh-length), and of course the trusted blazer. We predict shirts and blouses will be very popular over this winter, worn under either a smart fitted jumper, a baggy cricket style jumper, and under baggy cardigans. A trend which can be worn casually, or for work-wear, depending on how you style it up.

There was a great range of exhibitors this year; some old, some new. A mix of high street, online retailers and small boutiques made up the majority, but there really was something for everyone. Similar retailers were put together, so it was easy to establish what you wanted and then shop around for the best price, some were even open to a bit of haggling. We loved the boutique stalls as they all sold different things, but stuff that you wouldn’t find in your average high street. The only disadvantage we found was that a lot of these retailers tended to have only ‘one size’ clothing. There was fitting rooms but how many of us could be bothered with the hassle?!!! We tried to investigate all of the stalls at the arena, but there just wasn’t enough time or space (soooo crowded in there!) to have a mooch around everything. We have made some great new contacts though, so hopefully soon we will be bringing you new selections of clothing. And if that’s not enough to tempt you, there could only be one other thing that could do it......CELEBS!!! No Clothes Show is complete without some young and trendy celebs, and this year was no exception. At ‘The Clothes Show Live’ in London back in May, we were treated to supermodel Erin O’Connor, Nicky Hambilton-Jones, Caryn Franklin, and George Lamb. This time it was the very fabulous Fearne Cotton (looking her usual gorgeous self in a nautical t-shirt and sparkly leggings, with thick black eyeliner and pillar-box red lipstick), Dave Berry, John Pickard, Carly Stephenson and from Hollyoaks (aka Dom, Steph and Darren), and Jeff Brazier. Who could top that next year?! Personally we’d love to see the gorgeous Holly Willoughby and Dermot O’Leary!!

We would definitely recommend a visit to ‘The Clothes Show’ for every young lady out there. It’s a great place to get some Christmas pressies, treats for yourself, and to have a sneaky peek at trends to come, and of course some fit male models and celebs for you to drool over!! Maybe next year we could do a competition for you guys to win some tickets (any cash saving before Christmas has got to be a bonus)! We hope you have enjoyed hearing about this great event, and we hope to see you there next year!!

Lots of love, Frock ‘n’ Roll xxxx
